03 / Before you order

Three checks at your front door

  1. Mark the height and width. Tape a paper outline beside the door. Check it against the frame, canopy, house number and nearby window.
  2. Measure the projection. Hold a ruler out from the wall to the listed distance. Open the door fully and check the space along the path.
  3. Confirm the mounting position. Check the wall plate, fixing points and cable entry with your installer. If you want a pair, check both sides of the door.

04 / Shape & finish

Lantern or gooseneck?

Choose a lantern for a framed shape

Soho surrounds the bulb with glass and a frame. It is 40 cm high and projects 18 cm. Compare it where you want a tall fitting with less reach into the entrance.

Choose a gooseneck for a wider shade

Wren has a 26 cm shade and projects 40 cm. Its reach is 22 cm greater than Soho’s, so check the door swing, canopy and path before choosing the position.

Use the projection comparison above to check the depth against your entrance. Choose a suitable bulb and check the fitting’s installation requirements.

For another traditional lantern shape, see Ely in the outdoor lantern collection.

Before installation, confirm the selected fitting’s outdoor rating, bulb requirements and instructions with your installer. For other power options, see the outdoor lighting guide and solar garden lights.

Common questions

What size should a front-door light be?

Use the clear wall space and the fitting’s full measurements. A paper outline helps you judge the scale before ordering. Door height alone will not account for a narrow wall or canopy.

Should I choose one light or a pair?

A pair can suit an entrance with room on both sides. One light can work where the door is close to a corner or window. Confirm the mounting positions and electrical layout with your installer.

Which of these lights is the most compact?

Dulwich has the smallest listed height, width and projection: 22 × 10 × 15 cm. Check its wall plate against the mounting position too.
