Start with the places you use: the side table, reading chair and console. A cordless lamp can add light where there is no socket. Compare its size and battery life, then check whether you need additional light for reading or the rest of the room.

Plan lighting for seating, reading and walkways

01 / NARROW SIDE TABLE

A compact lamp beside the sofa

On an example 30 cm-wide table, Parker’s listed 10 cm width leaves 20 cm across the surface for other items. Check depth, stability and access to its touch control separately.

02 / READING CORNER

Choose reach and usable light

Livia is 23 cm high and 13 cm in diameter. It can sit on a table beside the chair without a trailing power cable during use. For reading, check that the lamp lights the whole page from your usual sitting position.

03 / CONSOLE OR SHELF

Check height as well as width

Rowan is 40.2 cm high and 16 cm in diameter. On an example 25 cm-deep console, that diameter leaves 9 cm of total depth. Check space above and allow clearance from the edge.

A room plan in four checks

  1. Sketch the furniture and sockets. Include the sofa, reading chair, television and walkways.
  2. Label the activities. Mark where you read, talk and watch television.
  3. Try positions after dark. Move an existing lamp around and assess it from the sofa, chair and doorway.
  4. Check everyday access. Plan switches, charging points and cable routes around furniture.

Small room or open-plan space?

In a small room, use an existing side table before adding furniture. Measure a wall light’s projection beside walkways. In an open-plan room, plan seating and dining separately, with light along the connecting route. The cordless dining-table lamp guide includes a table-fit check.

Three ways to add light without a ceiling connection
Option Useful when Plan before buying
Cordless table lamp You have a table or shelf but do not want a mains cable trailing to it. Overall width, height, light settings, runtime and a place to recharge.
Rechargeable wall light You want an accent on a wall without a mains connection at the fitting. The specified fixing method, projection from the wall, charging access and runtime.
Plug-in wall light A socket is within reach of the intended wall position. The complete cable route, switch position, wall fixings and clearance beside furniture.

Battery and plug-in wall lights can still require screws. If holes are unsuitable, start with freestanding lamps; see our rental-home lighting guide. For long evenings, compare the charging routine with a plug-in option.

Compare the lamp with the space

Parker: a compact side-table option

16.5 cm high × 10 cm wide, leaving room for a cup or book on a small table. Warm light with touch dimming; approximately 4–8 hours of runtime depending on brightness and a 1–2-hour USB charge.

Livia: a cordless option beside a chair

23 cm high × 13 cm diameter, with touch dimming and three light colours. Listed runtime is around 8 hours on high brightness and 12 or more on low; USB charging takes approximately 3–4 hours.

Rowan: a taller console-table lamp

40.2 cm high × 16 cm diameter: check clearance beneath shelves or artwork. Warm light with three brightness levels; approximately 4–8 hours of runtime depending on brightness. USB charging is listed; full charge time is not.

Brixton: a wall light near a socket

Brixton Copper Plug-In Wall Light has a UK plug, a 150 cm cable and an inline switch approximately 58.5 cm below the wall plate. It measures 16 cm wide × 26.3 cm high, projects 28.5 cm and requires screws. Measure the cable route, including bends, before choosing its position.

Choosing a wall-light material?

Compare the travertine and travertine-style range for material, full dimensions and power connection. For a rechargeable glass or stone design, use the battery wall-light comparison.

Questions about rooms without ceiling lights

How many lamps do I need?

There is no fixed number without knowing the room and each lamp’s output. Floor, table and wall lights can provide a complete scheme, but small decorative lamps alone may provide too little general or reading light.

What if there is no socket beside the sofa?

A cordless table lamp can move to a charging point between uses. A rechargeable wall light is another option if its fixings suit the wall. Compare runtime with your usual evening.
